Cork City Harbour Cruise
Located at the mouth of the River Lee, Cork Harbour is the second-largest natural harbour in the world, after Sydney Harbour.
This historic harbour has witnessed many significant moments in Irish history. During the Great Famine, thousands of Irish emigrants departed from these shores in search of new lives abroad. It was also the final port of call for the famous RMS Titanic, which anchored here before setting sail on her ill-fated maiden voyage.
The Cork City Harbour Cruise offers the perfect opportunity to explore this fascinating history while enjoying spectacular scenery. Sit back and relax with hot drinks and snacks available from our onboard tuck shop and coffee dock as you take in the sights.
This two-hour cruise is an ideal experience for all the family, combining captivating stories, breathtaking views, and historic landmarks.
Departing from Customs House Quay in Cork City, you’ll easily spot our bright orange vessel as we welcome you aboard the Cailín Óir ferry. With a capacity for up to 100 passengers, the vessel offers comfortable seating and 360-degree panoramic views from the top deck so you can fully appreciate the beauty of Cork Harbour.
The cruise travels along the River Lee and through The Lough, continuing into the middle harbour while passing charming coastal communities including Passage West, Monkstown, and Ringaskiddy, before reaching the spectacular, colourful historic town of Cobh.
One of the first landmarks you will see is Blackrock Castle, originally built in the 16th century as a coastal defence fortification to protect the harbour from pirates and invaders. Although destroyed by fire in 1722 and again in 1827, it was rebuilt each time by the people of Cork. Today, the castle is home to an observatory, visitor centre, and restaurant.
As the cruise continues, you will pass Haulbowline Island, which has served as a military base since it was first fortified in 1602. Once an important base for the British Army, it is now the headquarters of the Irish Naval Service and Ireland’s main naval base. The island is also associated with recreational sailing, as it was home to the world’s first yacht club, the Royal Cork Yacht Club.
The cruise also passes Spike Island, one of Ireland’s most historic islands, known for its impressive fortress and its role as a former prison and military stronghold.
You will also see Fota Island, home to Ireland’s only wildlife park and the historic Fota House and Gardens, which are now part of a luxurious five-star hotel, golf, and spa resort.
After taking in the sights and stories of Cork Harbour, the cruise returns to Customs House Quay, completing a memorable journey through one of Ireland’s most historic and scenic waterways.
